Johan received his Masters in Social Sciences in Clinical Psychology (2001) at the University of North-West in South Africa whereafter he started his own practice. 

Johan is a registered senior psychologist in New Zealand and South Africa, is a member of the New Zealand Psychological Society and an ACC accredited service provider. His experience includes running his own general practice at his rooms and also consulting in Private Medical and Psychiatric hospitals where he was part of the multidisciplinary team in the Psychiatry, Neuro, Critical Care, Oncology, Head and Neck and Orthopaedic wards.  He also consulted patients upon referral from specialists in medical and surgical wards as well as trauma related work as referred from the ER doctors. 

Johan served on a specialist medical team to advise the Director of Civil Aviation on licencing and medical matters of pilots and aircrew and has extensive experience working with pilots and other aircrew from a psychology, psychometric and human factors perspective. He holds a commercial pilot’s licence. 

His interests are:

• Working with adults, young adults, individuals, couples, geriatrics. 

• Working with emotional effects of medical related and other trauma

• Grief, coping, bereavement, depression, adjustment, stress, anxiety, chronic illness, death and dying and other life stage challenges.

• Positive emotional goal setting and growth

• Professional supervision to psychologists, counsellors, and other health professionals

• Aviation psychology and human factors

Johan was trained from an eclectic therapeutic perspective (positive and effective application of different techniques and interventions that may be used to fit the client’s needs), and although he works with a strong Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and Systems theory focus, his therapeutic style is still strongly person-centred.
